SKY DIVE - Part 1: Virgins, Grandfathers & Daring 2 Dream

Some time ago, I remember having a conversation with an airplane virgin. Please note that I didn’t say “virgin on an airplane”…that is a very different thing.

Definitions:

1. Air-plane Vir-gin (air-pleyn vur-jin) n.
A person who has never flown.
2. Virgin on an Airplane (vur-jin awn an air-pleyn) n.
An airplane passenger who has never had sex.

After I had shared about the joys of flying, the virgin, re-affirming their vow of airborne chastity, steadfastly declared “If God had meant humans to fly He would have given us wings.”

Well, yesterday God gave me Oleg…and I flew!

To celebrate his 65th Birthday, my late grandfather jumped from an airplane…and for the record, he isn’t “late” because of the jump. In fact, he lived to tell of his adventure for another 20 plus years. But, at the time, a pre-teen boy (namely me) was thoroughly impressed with his granddad’s amazing feat and the seeds of skydiving were firmly planted into this wonky brain of mine.

Finally, after 25 years of procrastifearination (procrastination driven by fear), I finally decided that it was now or never. I would, indeed, follow in my Granddad’s footsteps but as a younger man than he was. And hopefully, as did he, I would not only soar in the sky…I’d live to tell of it.

When I added “Sky Dive” (Dream #14) to my Dare2Dream list, back in January, it not only raised a few eyebrows, but very likely the hair on the necks of some. I have quickly discovered that the concept of tossing yourself out of an airplane (while in the air) is a very polarizing subject.

As my jump date approached, two very clearly defined camps emerged among my circle of friends:

The “Awesome I’m so jealous have a great time” Camp and,
The “Are you insane have you gone crazy I’d never do that in a million years even if I was forced to choose between jumping and facing a swarm of horse-sized brain eating jungle beetles” Camp.

Having since overcome my fear, taken the leap…and survived, let me address both camps:

“It was more than awesome, you should be extremely jealous and I had a double great time! I may be insane and crazy but skydiving is not as terrifying as it appears and even more awe-inspiring than you could ever imagine! Everyone should do it once…you will not regret it!”

Training for a Marathon is a...Marathon!

I'm sitting with my right knee wrapped tightly in ice...and I feel real good!

Almost four months ago, on February 8, I began training for my first marathon. Now, immediately upon reading that, some of you are probably thinking, "Timmy just ran a marathon!" If that's describes you...you'd be wrong.

My marathon date is still set for July 18 at the Massey Friendly Marathon in...Massey.

Now, when I added "Run a Marathon" to my Dare2Dream list back in January, many people figured I had bitten off more than I could chew. A common question was, “Why don’t you run a half marathon?” My answer was simple.

"Nobody dreams of running a half marathon!"

Look, I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but I was excited…until I ran my first 6k. Then I was scared to death! Seriously, I’d only survived one-seventh of a marathon and I thought I was going to die. One-seventh! "This is crazy!" I thought, as I was dry heaving into the toilet.

But, on March 28, I cracked the quarter mark. In fact, I ran 10k twice that week and everything seemed to be progressing rather nicely.

On April 17, I circled my community three and a half times and celebrated with...ice. I was sore and tired but I had just logged 17 freakin' kilometres and was absolutely ecstatic! I was right on my training schedule and thinking the sky was the limit!

However, over the next month, due to various scheduling conflicts, I didn't run as much as I would have liked. Despite the slow down, I was still looking forward to my May 16 long run. It would be my first attempt at 21k (a half marathon) which, although not a “dream”, was definitely a big milestone.

The evening before the big day, I loaded up on carbs and got to bed early. The next morning I woke up, ate a light snack, grabbed my bottle of coconut water (a very refreshing drink, I must say) and headed off.

For the first 45 minutes everything seemed normal, until I started hearing my right knee whisper, over and over again, "I don't like this". I tried to ignore it, but at the 9k mark Knee screamed, "I'm done!"

I took one more step and quickly realized that a second step would see me lying on the sidewalk. I reluctantly (but wisely) stopped, turned around and slowly walked another 3k before hopping (literally) on a streetcar to take me home…devastated!

As I sat in my bed wrapped in more ice, I couldn't help but think that the dream to run a marathon was done. My cardio seemed strong and my muscles seemed loose, but maybe my knee simply couldn’t handle that much running.

Not willing to give up completely, I planned to give the knee some rest and try again in a weeks time. But, with my momentum (and, quite possibly, spirit) broken, one week quickly turned into two…and two weeks became 18 days.

This morning, I ran again. And believe me that’s a victory in itself, because I think I was starting to deliberately highjack the dream by delaying my restart. Anyways, after giving myself a swift kick in the pants, I headed down to the boardwalk with a plan to essentially start over. I would try to run 5k and then…see what happens.

When I set foot on the boardwalk, I took a deep breath, started my stopwatch and broke into a slow jog. Not knowing how long the boardwalk was, but having a rough idea of my regular running pace, I did some early calculations based on my clock and figured I would need to run it three times in order to reach the distance where my knee gave out last time.

Since I was feeling a little driven, I changed the plan from 5k to 9k and at some point between those distances, I changed the plan again. With a fresh burst of, “You Can Do It!” attitude I decided I was going to run until I couldn’t run anymore…or 21k, whichever came first.

Three lengths of the boardwalk. Four lengths. Five lengths.

As I began my 6th length, I said to myself, “A marathon is FAR! What am I thinking!?” Now, I don’t know if it’s a mind over body thing, but soon after that my knee started to speak up as well. But, I pressed forward determined to finish the length and I’ll be honest with you, the last 10-minutes were a fight…but I made it.

Three complete laps of the boardwalk. 2 hours 4 minutes 37 seconds.

I called the house to see if someone could start running a freezing cold bath and limped home. Outside, I looked beaten. Inside, I was…over the moon!

After soaking in the tub (which was VERY cold!), I stretched and went online to find out how far I had run. Depending on who you talk to, the boardwalk is either 3k or 3.5k end to end. That means that I ran a total of 18k or 21k.

I’ll find out for sure, but for now…it doesn’t really matter. I know for sure that I ran farther than I’ve ever run, and I ran it with a determination that I will admit is not apart of my regular make-up. That’s why this Dare2Dream journey is so important to me.

You see, in the past I always gave up when things got difficult. I always looked for the easy route. I always “hid my glove”. (See “Regrets? I Prefer "Life Lessons"). So, today, the ice pack is like a badge of honour and I wear it proudly.

Ultimately, my knee may never allow me to run the distance of a marathon but I have seven weeks and new found determination to find out.

Daring to Dream,
Timmy

Nothing to fear, but fear itself!

DREAM #8: “ATTACK MY BIGGEST FEAR”

Many years ago, on a nature hike with a youth group, a few of the kids ventured into some cave like crevices along the trail. Now, I was not a very adventurous individual by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, my most memorable feat of bravery, to that point, was probably when I drank an entire bowl of French dressing. It was a little...spicy.

Anyways, on that hike, I decided to follow the others into the bowels of the earth (bowels may be an overstatement, but it’s a cool word). To this day, I really have no idea what caused me to do such a thing, because unlike when I braved a rollercoaster for the first time, there was no girl to try and impress.

As we crawled through the little tunnels, I was nervous, but once in...you were in, so I just kept pressing forward…slowly. After some time, “slowly” changed to “very slowly” and “very slowly” eventually became, “stopped”. Yep. Stopped. Completely. The tunnel had closed in and my arms had become pinned.

I can’t fully recall what the first thought that passed through my mind was, but it was either, “What a great opportunity to build character”, or “I’M GOING TO DIE!”

Probably the latter.

It was terrifying. I went into an absolute panic and was convinced I was not getting out. However, I must have somehow wriggled free, because…well…I’m no longer there.

For the years that followed, I may have been physically free, but my biggest fear had well been established and was holding me captive. The very thought of having my movement restricted in a confined space would start my heart racing and send shivers up my spine. So, for that reason, I avoided tight spaces and simply tried not to think about it.

But in January, when putting together my Dare2Dream list (see here), I either experienced some sort of brain cramp or an unusually rare moment of courage, because number #8 on that list of personal dreams was to “attack my biggest fear”.

How would I do it? Go back to that crevice? Crawl through an air duct? Bury myself in the backyard? They were all good options, but none of them was the "Timmy Way”.

You see, being the showman that I am, I immediately began trying to figure out how to accomplish this insane idea…in front of an audience! And, it didn’t take long before I contacted my brother-in-law (a very talented wood worker) and began brainstorming what has simply become known as “The Box”. I was measured and assured that “The Box” that Dan would construct would sufficiently test my level of claustrophobia.

A week or so later, I began promoting the Seriously Funny! show at which I would not only perform my stand-up comedy routine, speak about my Dare2Dream journey but get into “The Box” live on stage.

Saturday, May 1, 2010.

It was early afternoon and I was at Scarborough Baptist Church preparing for that evenings big show, when the cell phone rang. My sister and her husband were outside the building…with “The Box”. I ran outside to greet them and see, for the first time, Dan’s creation. It was very rustic, a lot smaller than I thought it would be and looked exactly like…a coffin. An old wood coffin. When we pulled it from the car, I felt excited…and a little queasy. It didn’t help that their car has a hearse feel to it.

After turning down an offer to give it a test run, we covered it with a black shroud and placed it at stage left, at the front. For the entire show “The Box” would remain a curious stage piece for the audience and a looming reminder for myself.

The show was going incredibly well. Musical group Jazz Unhinged had raised the roof…over and over.

The manic comedy magic of Doctor Dale was funny and mind-blowing (we still don’t know where the banana went).

And the crowd received both my stand-up routine and inspirational message with laughter and silence (at the appropriate moments).

Now, the time had come. The grand finale. My biggest fear was about to be attacked. As I introduced the final segment of the show, I reaffirmed that “the jokes may have been funny, but the fear was no joke” and wandered over to the mysterious mass to my left.

Pulling off the shroud, “The Box” was revealed to the audience as Jazz Unhinged played the Funeral Death March (with a touch of Darth Vader’s Theme, I think). It was a dramatically funny moment. After explaining what was about to happen, and taking a deep breath, I called Dale, the magician, and Dan, the coffin maker, to the stage.

Although “The Box” was shaped liked a coffin, it functioned like a drawer. A small door at the head was unlatched and a wooden panel was slid out. I lied down on the “stretcher”, with my head and toes touching each edge almost perfectly.

A strap was placed across my forehead, to keep my head down and I was slowly slid into what I hoped would not be my final resting place. A beam was inserted where my knees were, to keep my legs pinned down (a nice touch, I thought), and the door was closed.

Being a “performance” piece, a 5-minute countdown clock was put up on the large screen and my face, captured by a camera through a hole in the box, was projected onto a side monitor.

Five minutes is a long time.

I remember doing a lot of deep breathing, listening to the band, experiencing muscle spasms in my shoulders and feeling very relieved as the crowd chanted the final ten seconds.

As the clock struck zeros, I was pulled out (quickly) to a very encouraging cheer from the crowd and Jazz Unhinged playing the Up Standing Comedy Theme Song. Victory!

One dream down. 17 to go.

It was an inspiring experience for me and hopefully for all those in attendance. As one person said, “I’ll never forget the box”. And…neither will I!

Dare 2 Dream: BIG SHOW!

Wow.

It's been over 12 weeks since I launched my Dare2Dream initiative: a whirlwind journey to fulfill 18 personal dreams in 25 weeks. Well, we've reached the half way point and it has gone quickly. During the last few weeks, I've been asked many times, "How many dreams have you fulfilled?" The answer is...none.

WHAT!? None?

Yep. None.

But, that is about to change. After weeks of assessing and preparing and with July 21st fast approaching, the whirlwind journey is about to turn into a hurricane.

The doors blow open on May 1 at the "Seriously Funny!" event in Scarborough, ON.

Click Logo for more details

At the show, after performing a stand-up comedy routine and sharing about the Dare2Dream journey, I will fulfill my FIRST dream live on stage.

Which dream, you ask? Dream #8. That's right, the first item of the list to be scratched off will be "Attack my greatest fear"! The jokes may be funny, but the fear is no joke.

It is going to be quite the moment...and quite a show, in general.

Not long after announcing the show, musical group "Jazz Unhinged" and comedy musician "Doctor Dale" expressed interest in daring to dream with me. They were promptly added to the line up, and I am excited to no end!

The show will also help to accomplish Dream #11: "Raise money for charity", which now has a $10,000 goal attached to it. Ten thousand dollars!? Isn't that alot? Yep. I'm a dreamer remember.
A portion of the ticket sales (from this show and hopefully others) will be donated to "Stillerstrong", which is presently working with "Architecture for Humanity" to build schools in that earthquake ravaged country of Haiti. We can't forget Haiti...

Anyways, that's it for now...because if I say too much, I'll have nothing to reveal at the show...
Although, I will mention that I'm up to 17k while preparing for my marathon (Dream #9) and have been surprising myself (and annoying my family) while practicing the drums (Dream #16).
To attend click here for all the info.
If you'd like to help the fundraising effort and host a show, in the near future, please email timmyboyle@upstandingcomedy.ca
If you've just discovered Dare2Dream, please take a moment to follow the links (which includes THE LIST) in the right side-bar.

Have a good one,
Stay tuned,

D2D - An Inspiration

I am naturally very excited about my "Dare 2 Dream" adventure, but I was overwhelmed to receive the following letter, a few days after sharing about it with some people.

Here is an abridged version of that letter:

Hey Tim,

I wanted to tell you that your dreaming is inspiring and that I am glad you made the list…Lately I have felt as though my life was really lacking in adventure…My whole life, I have been in some sport or another and, when I get good at it, I always seem to quit for some reason or another…I never carry it out to the end of the journey…

I used to dream about becoming a world class climber. I turn 30 this year…by my 32nd birthday I would like to be among the ranks of world class climbers. At first I was just saying that I was daydreaming and that there is no way that it would ever happen, but then I started to feel like I would never accomplish anything with that attitude.

Hearing you talking about your dreams and how they are sheer insanity, yet you are going to try, has inspired me to start chasing after my dreams for real and not just dream about them.

Here is a poem I wrote:
My CalamityDreams are visions of reality
Written on my brain.
The need to make them real
Is causing all my pain.
My soul trapped from freedom
And my heart held in a cage;
This book that holds my life
Is nothing but a page.
To live the life of dreams
Is all my poor heart craves;
Every piece of every dream
Is what my sad soul saves.
To catch the wind and hold the sun
As close as one's true love;
To win the hearts of all mankind
And of the heavens above.

It is truly the conflict that I have dealt with for years…(The) need to live my dreams, and yet an inability to truly live at all. I hope this is it. This is the time for me to break forth and chase after what God truly has in store for me. Thank you for being such an inspiration, in a world full of dream crushers. Don’t ever back off. You are living how God intended, trusting on him to make everything to fall into place, as long as you take the first step, he will show you the next.

That's Awesome.
Dare 2 Dream!
Timmy
